How Realistic Are AI Fashion Photos?
AI fashion photos can look convincing, but realism depends on the source, prompt, garment, pose, and careful human review.
Realism starts with the source photo
A sharp, well-lit subject gives the model usable information about facial features, body shape, pose, shadows, and camera perspective. If the source is blurred, compressed, tiny, or heavily filtered, the model has to invent more of what it cannot see.
The requested outfit should also make physical sense for the visible pose. A front-facing shirt swap is simpler than reconstructing a long coat around crossed arms or adding a structured garment to a cropped seated photo. Realistic lighting and fabric folds depend on clear spatial cues.
Details that deserve a close check
- Face shape, eyes, teeth, skin texture, hairline, and distinctive marks.
- Hands, fingers, jewelry, straps, buttons, hems, collars, and garment closures.
- Printed words, logos, patterns, and repeated textures that may be distorted.
- Edges where clothing meets hair, arms, bags, furniture, or another person.
- Shadows, reflections, and background lines that should follow the new silhouette.
Improve realism without overpromising accuracy
Ask for one coherent edit, preserve the existing lighting and camera angle, and use a garment reference when exact visual direction matters. Generate several candidates and compare them with the source at full resolution rather than judging only a small preview.
For ecommerce, an attractive image is not enough. Verify that color, shape, print placement, length, and fit do not misrepresent the real item. AI imagery is useful for concepts and creative production, but a generated try-on is an approximation rather than proof of how a garment will fit or move in person.
